Tonight we had a short FHE lesson on the meaning of Christmas and talked about the symbolism of different holiday decorations. I was pleasantly surprised that the kids remembered some of this from last year. So they ARE listening sometimes! That is refreshing to learn. Since I subbed in Primary this week the kids started learning a song I never remember hearing before, Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus. Do you know this song? Where have I been if it is in the new songbook, I swear I have never heard it? I tried to sing it from memory but I sounded so bad (I had Milo laughing with my singing)! I had to get the cd out to drown me out!
After the kids went to bed, I had my own FHE. I know it sounds bad to not let the kids help but with my new decorations I couldn't help it. They are still at the ages of being 'too helpful' without helping at all and it stresses me out. I guess I could have had a diet coke first to mellow me out but that didn't happen either. I love my tree and it's new look. So shabby in the past, trying to stretch what little I had over the whole tree. After tonight I am in full swing with the holiday spirit. Listening to music, the decorating, I am looking forward to it all. The trick will be to get me to say that again in 2 weeks. It is doubtful that will happen but a girl can dream right?
So far this week I am not looking at a hectic schedule and that makes me so happy. I'm going to start working on my Christmas cards in the next couple days. Do you send a letter every year or do you just sign the card. I have done both and have not decided what to do this year. What do you like to get in the mail? Both letter and picture, just one or doesn't matter?

Your tree looks great, love the poinsettias. My solution to the kid/decorating problem is to let them have their own tree that they can do anything with. My boys are old enough now that they can help with the big tree too.
I LOVE Samuel Tells of Baby Jesus! One of my favorite Christmas songs, but you don't hear it that often.
I really enjoy getting photos in Christmas cards. Letters are nice too, but photos are a must for me.
Melanie, I love your tree and that you had your own family home evening to do it. How funny. I think your kids will be fine...just fine...without decorating the tree this year...mainly because you always put 200% into them.

Letter. Definitely letter. I love to hear what's going on in other's families so that I can "picture" them when I see their picture.

i usually just send a card and sign it. i don't mind the letter but i always feel like i'm being SOOOO cheesy in writing one. loves the pics though. i knew a family and they would send a letter out each year that the dad would write and it was hilarious. it was somewhat accurate and he highlighted each family member and his highlight was always something about being a monkey in the jungles of the amazon somewhere and his going-ons there. or something to that effect. those letters were the best to read!
What beautiful tree. Your children will be so happy to see the tree when they wake-up. That would be a good picture moment. It sound like you had a great FHE.
I sometimes do both. This year I was lazy NO!! Christmas letter. Just a photo Christmas card.
I enjoy that primary song, but hadn't heard of it until I taught primary 5 years ago.
Your tree looks great. I think you were smart to wait until the kids were in bed. I'm sure you spared yourself and them much frustration.
I vote for a letter and a picture for your Christmas card. I HATE getting cards with just a name signed in them. I want to see the whole family and know what's going on with them. It's my favorite thing about getting Christmas cards at all. (We got our 1st one in the mail today! Only a picture with their name, no letter. Bummer.)
I am laughing that you called it my own FHE. I gave that one serious thought this week, but decided the kids are just too excited about it. The box is sitting in the room waiting for me to decorate it.
I haven't heard of that song either.

I love getting Christmas cards in the mail. My favorite is the ENTIRE family, since many times that is rare and people just send one of their kids. I love getting letters even though my husband calls it a "brag session for the year" poop on him right?
