Tonight we had a great FHE with them. We made these fruit smoothies and the kids loved them. They asked if they were going to give them 'freeze brain'. Of course we told them yes! We read about the 2,000 Stripling Warriors (one of my favorites). They were really listening because when I finished I asked them questions and right off, they could answer them. It makes me wonder why I don't take advantage of this more. They soak it all up right now. We're working on it as a goal for this year (we only did ok last year), 1st Monday down!We also talked about talking nice. I'm sure most everyone has dealt with this one time or another (please say yes). The boys have been talking about cutting off their arms or heads and killing things or people (yikes I know!). I hate to even write that because I have no idea where it is coming from. I'm serious when I say no video games (they are too young anyway), no swords or guns (makes me nervous with Milo's real one for work), not very much TV (they don't sit still to watch it anyway). They rough house without the violent shows and games so we just felt the didn't need it. Is is backfiring on me? Do you think they might be hearing it at preschool? Please tell me it is an age related stage. If not I might go crazy.
This Sat I am planning a baby shower for a dear friend. I'm excited but haven't planned a thing yet. I am trying not to procrastinate everything, but usually I do. If you have some easy, fun thing you love to eat/play/do at baby showers, pass it along in a comment! I would love more ideas. I'm not a huge shower game person but I know you have to slightly entertain or they all thing 'blah, that was boring'. So I guess I should say anything fun that is low key at the same time.
I am still having problem with my scanner, blast! It is driving me crazy and I'm annoyed that it has to start doing something crazy right after my mom left (she works with computers). I'll try to figure it out soon but until then, I took a picture of the About time article from The Church News. I could read it all if I clicked on it and zoomed it. Maybe Firefox is the only one with the zoom option? Hope it works.

Thanks for the article. It is a good one. Good luck with the shower. I can only think of the typical shower. At my shower people wrote advice in a book for me. At a another shower we took photos and then printed them out and scrapbooked them in a small scrapbook for the mother to take home right there.
My other shower a friend did fondue. She melted chocolate and then had a bunch of things to dip in it.
Hope it goes smoothly for you.
The only thing I can think of for a shower is get a hooded baby towel, well this is what we did when we had a baby shower for my friend here, anyway get a towel and then get some fabric markers, you can buy them at walmart and have them on a table as you walk in and have each person write something on it, it is kind of like a card I guess but something they can use that would be fun.....My friend LOVED it and says that it makes her remember the baby shower everytime she uses it......something fun....
Ok for the killing and cutting off arms thing that is SO normal in my house too, in fact my 3 year old came in today and said "mom, Logan said he was going to cut off my head so that I couldn't talk anymore" ok where did he get that?????have no clue but I know I didn't teach it to him......I think it is just the age so no need to worry at least I don't think you should.....Hope the smoothies went over well, my kids LOVE smoothies....
i wish i had cute baby shower ideas. you could do a poll to guess the weight and date of the baby's birth. for crystalyn's shower i wrote up facts about baby care and had the guests try and guess the answer then i gave the list of stuff to her. but it took me a long time to compile the list. for my shower crystalyn did a display with pictures of brett and me when we were babies (she also hung onesies with clothespins) and that was really fun.
If I think of any other ideas I'll come back and comment.
We usually do a little book and pass it around for advice from everyone- I still have mine from Mya's shower and it is really cool to read what my Grandmas' wrote and all that.
It has to be normal for little boys- all my little cousins do that and Mya will pick things up from them when they play. One day she told me, "Oh no, don't kill me Mom!" and I about died. I say as long as they aren't hurting each other then just let it run its course maybe? Good luck!
Even my little girls talk mean (a lot). Noelle started talking about "getting dead" and taking her "heart out" when she was only 3 after watching Snow White. Nothing is safe!
Good luck on the shower,...I will try to think.
ONe shower I went to they had papers printed out with like 20 questions. They were lines from nursery ryhmes with one word missing and we had to fill in the blank. Everyone seemed to enjoy trying to remember the old rymes.
I have also seen where they hang a clothes line across the room up in the front and when the mom opens the gifts they pin up hte clothes so everyone can see. It is pretty cute and ends up being a great decoration.
Good luck, planning a shower is always a lot of work!
I have given a few baby showers for friends. That last one was a brunch. We had OJ, hot chocolate, muffins, and everyone could make their own Fruit 'n Yogurt Parfait. We didn’t have any games. Everyone just talk and ate and open up the gifts. It was a very nice shower. Good luck with yours.
My boys love the the 2,000 Stripling Warriors story
I loved hearing about eveyones shower ideas! I especially liked Becca's idea where you hang the new clothes on a line so everyone can see. Good job for FHE! I will have to do that, my kids would love it!
Way to go with having FHE. Lou isn't home till after 8 on Mondays so we are doing it on Sunday this year. I too wonder why I don't take advantage of more teaching opportunities since the kids love stories and love spending time with me, who knows how long it lasts?
As for a shower idea one of my favorite things that was done at one of my showers was painting blocks. My friend bought little wooden blocks at Michael's all my friends painted them. I love when Kira plays wiht them because it makes me think of my friends. It was a good activity because everyone could jsut sit and paint and talk.
Oh yeah....boys don't need any training or visuals to want to be physical and delight in bloodshed and chaos. I think it's as natural to a lot of little boys as playing with dolls is to a lot of little girls. My son delights in seeing crashes, explosions, messes, fights, etc. Oh boy.....
I don't have any baby shower advice but I enjoyed reading the ideas from others.
Good job on FHE, we need to recommit this year, we only did ok last year too.
Thanks for the article. I could read it and don't have firefox.
Ok, my comment got eaten and I had written out a ton of ideas for you! Here goes:
-Have a covered tray filled with all sorts of baby items, give out pen/paper, uncover the tray for 20-30 seconds, then have everyone write down what they remember
-Memory with candybars, idea is to come up with words that have to do with having a baby and find a candy bar to go with, so Dr's bill would be 1000 grand candy bar, etc so when you get a match you have to guess what the candy bar is in order to get the candy bar.
-Have a set of thank you notes and ask each guest to write their address on the envy, so all the mom needs to do is write the note and stuff the envy.
Good lucjk with the shower! Hope its fun!
The only shower game I can remember playing is taking a roll of toliet paper and having everyone guess how many "squares" around her tummy is. Good luck with the planning.
And as far as the boy talk, yes that is TOTALLY my house. We have a house of Star Wars junkies. :)
i really dislike shower games..so around here we have open house showers..where the friends come in, you eat, open gifts and then go home..if you WANT a game..we do this for bridal showers..you get a tray (you could do baby stuff) like they are going to memorize everything thats on the tray..then take it out and have the baby's mom go out and tell them to write everything they can remember about the mommy to be..its hilarious because nobody's really paying attention to her!!
good job on fhe! id REALLY suggest preach my gospel..it kept me on track for every monday last year! WHEW!
as far as the boys being violent...i'd go with cuz they're boys? i have NO idea..ive got all girls..i wouldnt worry too much though..
I have to say I don't enjoy shower games. I'm all about having good food, good decorations, and good conversation. But that's just me.
About boys and violence: when I had Max, I vowed we would never have toy guns in our home. I just hate guns. Then I noticed that he would make a gun out of legos, he would make a gun out of anything, even to the point of chewing his toast into a gun shape! Then I relented. My boys play video games, too (approved ones) and I don't think they're violent at all.
My boys are always wrestling and such. When they try to talk violent I stop it right then and there. I hate it! But they try. I think it is a boy thing.
The funnest game for a baby shower I have played is the baby terms matching the candy bars. I have it if you want me to email it to you . THen who ever got the most right gets to pick out their favorite candy bar and then you go down the line so that you aren't taking home 10 candy bars.
Yum...fruit smoothie. Share the recipe.
Talking, playing, and sharing is something we always hit almost every Monday for FHE. Its a staple in our house.
Sorry I wish I had some good ideas for the shower, but I don't. Looks like you got some good ones in the comments.
my little guy gets excited about doing strange things too. it makes me second guess what i've been letting him see. my husband reminds me that he played guns as a kid and it was just a part of being a kid. my husband is not violent at all so i try to take a deep breath and talk to him about saying "i'm going to GET you" instead of the dreaded "i'm going to kill you."
i'll have to think about the baby shower thing. i'm not big on the games either. the last one i was at they had a blank list and the dad's name and the mom's name and we had to use those letters to come up with a list of baby names. it was amusing. good luck!
