Oh Dane & The Day

{Daner with my grandma's dog}

Tonight when were getting the kids to bed Dane kept asking me to talk to him while I was singing to Nathan. He always does this and I tell him to wait his turn, that Nathan doesn't interrupt me when I'm singing to him. I usually end Rock-a-Bye Baby with some random made up song like, 'I love my boys, they are so handsome, lala, lala.' You know, since I'm such a good singer and all. Anyway when it was his turn he said to me, 'Mom, I know you were singing him 2 songs so you didn't have to talk to me, that wasn't nice.' Just for the record, I didn't do that on purpose.

Right after the above happened he was trying to get his blanket straightened out and he was having a hard time. He started getting frustrated and said, 'I don't like it when my blanket's all funky. Fix it mom!' Well I hate bunched up funky blankets too. Who can blame him?

We finally get to his version of Rock-a-Bye Baby and he says to me, 'Mom, I do. not. like. your breath.' He paused with each word like he wanted to say it and it needed to be said but didn't want to say it to hurt my feelings. Thanks Dane, I'll sacrifice my teeth for a little while to get you in bed, sheesh!

A few minutes after they were settled in bed (so we thought) Dane came back out of bed and said with the most serious face, 'When I'm a teenager... I want to play basketball.' I said 'OK, if that's what you want.' with that, he turned around and went back to bed. What in the world? He has so many things he wants to do when he's a teenager too. Earlier today he said he wanted to go off the high dive, drive a car and something else I can't think remember right now. Why does he even think about being a teenager when he's only 4? I'm not sure if I should laugh (the one I do the most) or be frightened he even knows what a teenager is. Oh this kid.

Back to this morning.

The big kids were in school and Dane was invited to play with a friend. I had the house to myself. A major rarity in the last 6 years. I can't tell you how many times (in the thousands I'm sure) I have longed for a quiet house with no kids in it. To just be home with no one else. It just felt so weird.... like I shouldn't enjoy it. It took me some time to relax and not sit here just bewildered.

I know if you have little kids at home you are wondering what is wrong with me. And I asked myself that same question today. Is this what motherhood does to you? You feel like you'll never, ever get to have alone time and when you do, it leaves you feeling a bit guilty. Don't worry I ended up finding plenty to do and I did enjoy it. It just felt so different without little humans begging for my time and attention (and following me into the bathroom). Here's to tomorrow with Dane asking me every 5 minutes what we should do now. That's where I feel comfortable. For now that is.

Hey Melanie!

I've seen your comments around and it's fun to come to your blog and read about you! How great to have a few moments to yourself. I'm looking forward to that too, but then...I'm sure the guilt will come in that I'm not doing something absolutely earth-shattering with all of that time.

I love my alone time it's very rare with a 2 and a 3 year old. Sometimes when Kira goes to a friends house and Joshy is napping it's like I have a lone time it's wonderful but like you said I feel guilty. Ah the joys of being a mom.
Dane cracks me up. I don't think Kira even knows the word teenager. That's great that he knows so many things he wants to do.

Thanks for calling yesterday. It was nice to catch up. Do you think you all will come over tomorrow?

Oh...also I think it's funny that Dane constantly asks you what you're going to do next. Jayni always asks me, "what's the plan, mom?". I think it's so funny!! It must be a 4 year old thing.

Very cute!! I am the same way...can't wait to get out alone and then feel totally guilty and LONELY! For months I waited to get to the mall along to shop and then spent the hour being lonely and not even trying stuff on! What is that?? I am getting better and learning to just enjoy, but it is wierd to be without at least one asking questions, demanding things and keeping me busy! The joys of motherhood!

I do the same thing. I want time to myself and when I have it I am clueless what to do!

So many funnisms with Dane. You are the mom to sing to your kids...I can't even carry a note!

Oh my, what a crackup that Dane is! I don't feel guilty about my rare alone time. But I do feel a little flustered because I know it is limited and I can't figure out how best to use it! Finally I just pick something, because anything done alone is satisfying in the end. He must be feeling like his big brothers are grown up to be thinking about what he'll do when he's a teenager! too funny.

I have heard the breath comment before in my house. Cracked me up! I am laughing at the made up songs - I do them as well - with STINKY somewhere placed in there... That babe of yours is a doll! Already asking questions for when he is a teen! Love that!~

It is an unnatural feeling to have the house to yourself when you are in the middle of the little kid years. Especially when you're used to constant Dane-isms! He is so funny.

THat is so funny about the breathe. I have had that done to me before. So funny.

My kids do and say the same thing. THe love to tell me what they are going to do when they are older.

Your grandma's dog looks fake!

Dane is so funny. I love the cute things kids say.

I sometimes feel guilt about the alone time and then at the same time I feel panicked to make the best use of the precious minutes.
