Hernia Anyone?

I have to be a bit vague on this post to avoid any weird Google searches. Use your imagination and you'll be able to figure out what I'm talking about, ha!

Just a little back story. For the past few months Dane has been a bit obsessed with 'repositioning' if you know what I mean. It's been pretty annoying since he hasn't really ever cared where he was or who he was with. He took care of business. Then about a month ago, I was getting him out of the shower and called Milo in a panic because 'things' didn't look right down there. He talked me though the 'things' and said it was fine. (This is getting hard to be vague). About a week after that, the 'things' looked even more uneven if you will. Milo 'checked' him out and with his medical skills announced he thought Dane had a hernia. I was shocked and asked how he came to that conclusion. His answer, well he's never going to live it down. He said, 'I've seen a lot of hernias on pigs and this looks like a hernia!' I was cracking up, thinking this is no pig, this is our kid!

The next day I took Reed in for an ear infection and while we were there, I mentioned the 'problem' Dane was having and so the doctor took a look. He said, hernia (inguinal), Milo was right! We've laughed about that a few times. There is no pediatric surgeon here in our little town so he's scheduled for a consult next week and surgery after that. If you haven't noticed, he's our kid that 'stuff' happens to. A broken leg at 3, a Shriner's Hospital visit earlier this year and now a hernia surgery. No telling what's in the future for him!

The very next day (my birthday to be exact), Milo got in to the doctor because he had been having some stomach pain and it was just getting worse. Guess what, a HERNIA for him too!! This time it was an umbilical hernia and he was scheduled for surgery last Thursday (9/25).

He was pretty annoyed at my self portrait attempts. He said I was making his head look too big. I did cause his head is not this big, ha!

Milo was pretty nervous when we first got there. He hasn't been a patient since I've known him and I don't think he wants to be another one anytime soon. Watching him get the IV, the gown, the instructions. It was all turned around, usually it's me in the hospital getting those things getting ready to have a baby. Reed kept wanting Daddy to hold him and every time Milo took him, he just laid down on his chest. It was so cute.

A friend from our ward, another guy from our ward and a cousin work in the OR (benefits of a small town). Milo started to relax when he knew they were going to be around. They joked around and took the nervous edge off. We were both grateful for that. Reed had a blast with Scott! He carried him around, showing him the sights of short stay. It was adorable.

My cousin Ken joked around asking if someone is bald, do they really need a cap like this? Yeah, we laughed at Milo's expense. He laughed too, he likes bald jokes.

Scott got Reed his very own hat. We were cracking up at how cute he looked all ready for surgery.

This is how he ended up with the hat on. He's playing with Scott's ID tag. He was so, so good that day. We were all over the place. Home, hospital, home again, Marion's, back to the hospital. He never melted down, took short little naps when he needed to and was the best little trooper. Such a blessing.

I found this cute photo of Reed and Winston(can you tell Winston is teething?) after we got home and everyone was in bed. I guess the boys just sat by each other and played among all the chaos of that night. Thanks for taking it Shaila, it was a great surprise!

I'm happy to report all went well with Milo's surgery. He has been doing good the past few days, just tired and sore. I think he loved the afternoon naps the first couple days post surgery. Can you blame him? I love an afternoon nap. He has a nasty bruise that I'll spare you the sight of. If you're family, he'll proudly show it off, ha! I'm so thankful he's healthy and recovering so well. While I was at the hospital I started thinking how we can take something like our health for granted. We rely on being healthy and thank heavens for us, it's a daily blessing.

I can't say Thanks enough for all the help we received last Thurs. Mike took Dane to work with him right before we left for the hospital. A 5 yr old, in a law office for 4 hours, can you believe it?! I hear he did pretty good until the hour or so. Lunch at McDonald's helped I'm sure. Maybe something rubbed off on him and law is in his future. Thanks for taking on Dane, Mike!! Shaila picked the kids up from school, braving the pick up line. No easy task so Thanks! Marion fed them all dinner, took them to Nathan's soccer game, bathed them and brought them home all ready for bed. And she made us a fabulous dinner the next night. A mother's work never ends!! Thanks for ALL of it!! We were checked on by lots of people and are so thankful for the love and support we receive. What would we do without it?!

And we'll be back at this again next month when it's Dane's turn. I'll pray for a healthy, speedy recovery and a cooperative patient. Another question, can I get that twice in a row?
