Hernias No More

Dane's surgery went great! We are so glad it's over and behind us. They were over 2 hours behind schedule due to a couple emergencies. Nothing went quick except the surgery, the waiting was hard, especially on Dane. He was a super trooper because he couldn't eat at all and the last hour before they got him in that's all he talked about. He said his tummy wanted anything to eat, it didn't matter. This coming from my picky eater.

He thought these tiger jammies were so funny. And he thought it was disturbing that he had to put them on without underwear. He told me, 'this is definitely weird'. I was laughing so hard in the bathroom where he got dressed.

Milo didn't want to participate in the self portrait but I'm so glad he complied, I love it. Dane with the headphones on, chilling in the hospital bed.

He was so hilarious after they gave him the medicine to make him loopy. I could tell he was starting to drift into happy land and I asked him if he felt funny. His answer was, 'Kind of like a donkey's attached to my head.' What?! Milo and I were cracking up! We don't even talk about donkeys so this one came from deep in his brain, ha. They also gave him this mask to play with and become familiar with before they connected it to the 'sleepy gas' and it smelled like bubble gum. He would take these really exaggerated breaths and say, 'Oh yeah, this smells goooooood.' I love this funny kid.

Reed was an angel the whole day. My only complaint was an undetected messy diaper on the way up (1.5 hr drive) and a similarly undetected messy diaper on the way home. Resulting in a bad diaper rash. Poor boy.

The surgery went well. The surgeon said that the hernia was bigger than she had first thought so she was really glad it all got taken care of so soon. She also said to limit some of his activity. I guess most of the time kids will stop themselves before the pain is too bad. As adults we push ourselves through the pain, causing more injury. His few limitations are going to be quite hard to control. No jumping on a trampoline (bad, he goes to school at a gymnastics center) and no wrestling (again bad, he wrestles Nate every single day!). I told the surgeon keeping him will be a bit like taming a wild monkey but I'd do my best. He's been as busy as ever with the big kids home this weekend but I suspect he'll be a little more laid back with them gone. He likes to keep up when they're around. I'm all for a lazy Monday. Bring it on Dane.
