Tonight I almost skipped out of Family Home Evening and went to the store. Nothing was planned and I didn't want to go to the store late, blah, blah, blah. It's so easy to justify sometimes. I knew that meant I needed to stay so I scratched the store.
We've been getting more lax with our reading in the Book of Mormon since school has been out so I told the kids last Thursday that we'd be reading every night no matter what. Last night we finished 3 Nephi 10 and so I knew tonight we'd be reading chapter 11, when Christ visited the Nephites. We had only read about half the chapter and the thought came to me to watch the last part of the movie, The Testaments. We've watched this movie many times but haven't ever been this far in our reading before. This 10 minute or so clip is showing the destruction that happened on the earth the time of Christ's death and then shows Him visiting/blessing the Nephites. You can watch it here.
I cannot watch that last part without feeling overwhelmed by the spirit (cue lots of tears). Every time. The whole movie is good but the last part is amazing. It is such a powerful 10 minutes and it helps me know, really know, that Christ knows who I am. He knows where I'm at and how I feel. Yesterday. Today. Right now. I know I'll recognize Him in an instant and I know He'll call me by name. I know He lives and I know He will come again. I feel so blessed.
The kids asked some really heartfelt questions and I felt the spirit again as Milo and I talked to them and told them that Christ knows each of them and will call them by name someday. Kathryn told me she almost cried watching the movie this time because she said it felt so special. They are growing up and building testimonies and I know I would have missed this opportunity if I would have crossed the store off my list. Tonight taught me I need to listen to that 'voice' more often. So glad I stayed home.

Ohhhhhhhh, I'm so glad you stayed home, too.
I love this Melanie. I love the reminder. I love the teaching idea. I love the testimony. I love you.
Thank you.
What a great experience...I am so glad you shared this! I feel the same way when reading that section. I love to watch my kids start to grasp gospel principles and to have those tender moments when they feel the spirit...I am all teary eyed just reading this....
what a wonderful post Melanie. I love reading 3 Nephi 11 . On my mission when i would read that Chapter with investigators, The spirit was always so strong...
You were definitely inspired to think of the movie while you were reading that chapter. I'm so glad it ended up being a special experience for everyone.
How neat! I love when the kids have a lightbulb moment and get the concept. You are a good Mom for not going to the store. :)
What a great night together. The neverending list of things to do sometimes just has to wait. Good choice.
I'm so proud that you and Milo are striving to make scripture reading a habit in your home. It's SO important and I wish it had of been stressed more when I was a young mother but I wish even more that I would have known the importance of it for my kids. It all starts with us as parents; thoughts, words, and actions. We've been entrusted to nurture and love these spirits back to our Heavenly Father. Thanks for doing better than I did!
